20 Questions to Ask When Watching a Film

These question are based on those in Focus: The Art and Soul of Cinema (Damaris, 2007). They are intended to help you organise your thinking as you watch a film. As well as helping you in your own thinking about movies, these questions also provide a useful framework for group discussions.

Documentary film-making has seen a very significant resurgence in the last few years. Some of the questions to ask when watching feature films apply just as much to watching documentaries. But there are a number of specific things to consider in relation to documentaries. These questions will help you, and they’re ideal to use in a group discussion.
