Understanding information and media technology

As part of the “Media Messages Matter” multiplex session during the Cape Town Congress in 2010, Joseph Vijayam (introduced by Nick Pollard) outlined some key points in understanding information and media technology.

Joseph defines technology as “knowledge and human skill applied to practical uses”, and says that “a machine or technological tool is a contrivance that extends the powers of the human body or brain beyond their normal or natural limits.”

The Internet as a whole is the most powerful tool that is available today. It is a paradigm-changing tool for this generation. Like most if not all tools, it can be used for both good or evil. Four principles should guide us as we embrace this tool – and all information and media technology – for good:

Information and media technology belongs to God and we are stewards
It has real and physical implications
The information superhighway can enlighten the world
Christ is to be honored
This tool is to be harnessed and controlled
